Joe Dunne hails Cambridge spirit after late win over Notts County

Joe Dunne praised Cambridge’s reaction to falling behind as his team beat Notts County 3-2.

Barry Corr headed a winner in stoppage time to earn victory for the U’s, backing up Ade Azeez’s brace that cancelled out Enzio Boldewijn’s spectacular opener for Notts County.

Richard Duffy had equalised 12 minutes from the end to set up the late drama.

“It’s part of what we’re about – picking a team today with what we had available and going for it, trying to get on the front foot against a really good side,” said Dunne.

“In the end we had to dig in and show real bravery to come away with three points.

“The first half was to and fro, lots of attacking intent from both teams.

“We started the second half exceptionally well and then it was really tough. When they made their substitutions, (with) the quality of what they can bring on, we just felt we needed at that time some experience on the pitch and it paid off in the end.

“We gave them some encouragement at half-time. We felt we were well in the game, we just needed to work on one or two things.

“We spoke about not being tentative, go out and be yourself, believe in yourself a little bit more in the second half.

“We got the goals through good endeavour and then took our chances when they came. We’ve come out on the right side, which is good for us.”

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan was left to rue his side’s defending as they slipped to their first loss of the season, following a draw with Colchester last week.

“You can’t defend like that. You can’t give goals away like that and then expect to come away from any team and try and win games,” he said.

“We’ve scored two goals away from home, should have scored a couple more with the big misses, but I thought we were really poor with the goals we conceded. It was very disappointing.

“They get everybody up off their seats, they get a new lease of life and then we conceded another one with people diving in, people in the wrong positions, so it’s a matter of switching off on a couple of occasions today and we’ve been punished because of it.

“We scored a great goal, we’ve created some great chances, played some good stuff. With the performance it looked like we’re getting there bit by bit, but we’ve got to get better soon.

“We deserved something today but when you give goals away you’re going to be punished. We never get those freebies so we can’t be giving it to them.”
