Frankie Bunn hails goalkeeper Daniel Iversen

Oldham boss Frankie Bunn hailed the performance of on-loan goalkeeper Daniel Iversen after he earned the Latics their first point of the season at Forest Green.

The Denmark Under-21 international pulled off a string of second-half saves to deny Rovers a second after Reuben Reid had given them a half-time lead.

Bunn lso praised some of the youngsters thrown into the starting line-up due to Oldham’s injury woes.

He said: “They pressed us hard second half and the keeper has pulled off some good saves.

“He stood up to the plate today and showed us what he is capable of and there will be times when he’ll be thanking the backline for keeping people away but he has pulled off some good saves today.

“I was disappointed particularly with the first-half performance. We weren’t cohesive, we never really had an effort on goal. At least we had a go in the second half  when we dug in and kept going and at least we got a point.

“When you have that many kids playing they are going to make mistakes but they never gave in and showed spirit and stuck together in the bad times. People have to be patient, I think there were five academy players in that side.

“It’s our first and let’s just hope there’s a few more to come.”

Reid handed Forest Green a 22nd-minute lead, a smart finish from just outside the area.

And there should have been more for the Cotswolds club after the break only for Reece Brown and Carl Winchester to be denied by the excellent Oldham shotstopper.

The equaliser came 12 minutes from the end when Forest Green’s on-loan goalkeeper Robert Sanchez brought down Jose Baxter handing a penalty for the visitors which skipper Dan Gardner duly dispatched.

The home side looked to have grabbed the winner in the final minute when Christian Doidge tucked the ball away only for the referee to disallow the effort for a foul on the keeper.

And that decision frustrated Rovers manager Mark Cooper who thought the goal should have stood.

“I’ve just seen the footage of the goal that wasn’t and it was a goal – but we’re not getting the rub of the green with referees,” he said.

“I think it’s a small club thing. We had a penalty against us last week which was terrible and they’ve apologised for and today the referee was right in line and should have seen it.

“He gave a foul on the keeper but he’s not got control of the ball, he’s only got one hand on it and it’s rolling away from him so it should have been a goal.

“I’m pleased with the performance and the intensity was really good from the first minute. But when you get a heavyweight boxer on the floor you have to make sure he doesn’t get up, you have to put him to sleep. We had to score that second goal.”
