Newport edge out Crewe thanks to Day penalty heroics

Joe Day saved Paul Green’s second-half penalty to help Newport County clinch a 1-0 victory over Crewe.
Padraig Amond’s header before the interval proved the difference between the teams but only after Day’s penalty heroics as Newport clinched their first League Two win of the season.
Newport had early chances to take the lead but they almost went behind when Crewe left-back Harry Pickering rattled the cross-bar from a free-kick 30 yards from goal.
The visitors had opened their campaign with a comprehensive 6-0 thrashing of Morecambe last week.
But as the rain came down in south Wales, Mickey Demetriou stepped out of defence and clipped an inch-perfect cross on to the head of Amond, who nodded it back across goal and into the bottom corner for a 1-0 lead after 33 minutes.
Newport continued to dominate after the break but their advantage would have been wiped out if it were not for the goalkeeping heroics of Day.
Demetriou shoved Green just inside the box to gift a penalty to Crewe, but when Green got up to take the spot-kick, Day dived down to his right to keep it out.
