Burnley boss Sean Dyche happy with draw in Istanbul

Sean Dyche declared himself content with a goalless draw in Burnley’s Europa League trip to Basaksehir Istanbul having travelled with a depleted squad.

The Clarets were second best at the Fatih Terim Stadium on their first competitive continental outing in 51 years, a third-round qualifying first leg, but still have the chance to put the tie to bed at Turf Moor next week.

Dyche made six changes to the team which edged past Aberdeen in the previous round, and the likes of Chris Wood, Steven Defour, Robbie Brady, Tom Heaton and new signing Matej Vydra did not even travel, leaving one place unfilled on the away bench.

“I think overall, one of the more pleasing things is we had to bolt together a team and come somewhere like this where we’ve never been before and find a way of getting a result,” said Dyche, in quotes from the Lancashire Telegraph.

“You know, it’s tough coming to a place like this, it’s new to these lads, and we’ve come with 17 players – that’s our lot.

“So I’m really pleased, certainly with the shape and attitude, on a heavy, leg-sapping, old-fashioned pitch.”

Dyche was unconcerned about his side’s relative lack of time on the ball – hardly a new experience for a side who have spent much of their stay in the Premier League as underdogs and one he feels is an increasingly poor predictor of results.

“It’s normal for us away in the Premier League, we often don’t dominate the ball, especially away,” he said.

“Most clubs don’t statistically dominate the ball away from home in the Premier League, so the basics, the shape, the energy, the will, is very important.

“We’ve had 10 years of everyone saying possession wins – it doesn’t, as the World Cup showed. It’s less relevant now.”

Around 600 Clarets fans made the journey to Turkey and their vocal support was well appreciated.

Dyche, in quotes attributed to the Burnley Express, added: “I want to mention the fans, to bring so many was brilliant. Long journey, their voice, the way they got behind the lads – absolutely brilliant.”
