Christian Doidge brace helps Forest Green to victory

A Christian Doidge double helped Forest Green begin the new Sky Bet League Two season with a 4-1 win on the road at Grimsby.
The striker’s brace, along with Carl Winchester’s strike and a Danny Collins own goal, saw Mark Cooper’s side respond after Mitch Rose’s first-half penalty had given the hosts the lead.
The deadlock was broken when referee Martin Coy judged Martyn Woolford’s cross to have struck the arm of Lloyd James, and Rose made no mistake as he gave Grimsby the lead from the spot.
Forest Green brought themselves back level after the break when Winchester found space in the centre of the box and planted the ball into the bottom corner after the Mariners failed to clear their lines.
A bizarre moment then saw Collins roll the ball into his own net as he looked to pass back to James McKeown, before Doidge headed home his first in acres of space.
The striker grabbed his second as he latched on to a back pass to pile on the misery for Grimsby.
