Davies completes MLS record $13.5 million move to Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich has completed the transfer of Canadian midfielder Alphonso Davies from the Vancouver Whitecaps, formally announcing the move on Wednesday.

Bayern has completed a transfer that sources tell Goal is worth a guaranteed $13.5 million (€11.5m/£10m), with performance incentives that could take the deal above $21.5m. The transfer also includes a 15 percent sell-on clause, which will give the Whitecaps a percentage of any future sale of Davies by Bayern.

Davies, who turns 18 in November, will formally join Bayern when the January transfer window opens, though Bayern manager Niko Kovac suggested Davies could train with Bayern sooner depending on when the Whitecaps' season ends. FIFA rules prohibit Davies from playing for Bayern until the transfer window after his 18th birthday.

"He's very young, and he's very talented. Lots of clubs want to have him," Kovac said of Davies on Tuesday. "He's a young player, and young players, when they are as good as him, are very expensive because a lot of clubs are interested in him - and I'm sure because a lot of clubs are interested in him the price might go up.

"He's very fast, he's very talented, he's very good. I believe he has a very big future if he gets the right training."

The transfer fee is the largest ever paid for an MLS player, surpassing the $10m (£7.5m) Villarreal paid for then New York Red Bulls forward Jozy Alidore in 2008.

"I am very happy with my move to Bayern," Davies said in statement issued by Bayern. "As a kid I always dreamed of such a moment. Now the dream has come true. But now the work continues, now I have to give everything to take advantage of this opportunity."

Davies and Whitecaps VP of soccer operations Greg Anderson traveled to Philadelphia to complete the deal, and are returning to Vancouver for a formal presentation of the move on Thursday.
