PUB bosses have announced the perfect cure for England fans' World Cup hangover – 50,000 free pints.

The great ale giveaway – in celebration of National Pub Fortnight – could not have come at a better time with the nation mourning the Three Lions' heartbreaking semi-final defeat by Croatia.

Pub profits have swelled by £33million thanks to customers packing out the country's bars to watch the England team's exploits in Russia.

Now the drinks industry is offering the perfect antidote to the team's failure to land the ultimate prize.

Bar bosses are giving away 568 kegs of ale – enough to fill 355 bath tubs – on a first come first served basis.

DRINK UP: As it is the great ale giveaway to celebrate National Pub Fortnight

Free drinks on offer include Fosters, John Smiths, Kronenbourg 1664, Strongbow, Strongbow Dark Fruit, Heineken and Amstel and bottles of Old Mout, Bulmers and Heineken.

The giveaway will take place from July 20 to August 5 at 2,500 pubs across the UK.

One dejected England fan wrote on social media: "Was feeling pretty crap today until I saw this – free drink!

"Get in!

"Just what the doctor ordered.''

Another wrote: "Just when you thought the world had ended in comes the free ale.

"Reckon the team deserve a pint. They did great – so great I thought they may actually go all the way. Not to be. But I'll drink to them.''

The offer is being made by leased and tenanted bar business Ei Publican Partnerships and pub firm Star.

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: "The great British pub is the beating heart of any local community.

"It’s where we go to spend quality time with family and friends.

"National Pub Fortnight is both a reminder and celebration of the vital role pubs play in our local community.''
