The Gunners agreed a £26.5m (€30m) deal with Sampdoria for the defensive midfielder.

However, Torreira snubbed Arsenal's offer to undergo his medical in Russia during Uruguay's World Cup campaign.

Torreira, 22, is set to compete his move to Arsenal next week after Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup yesterday by France.

And Torreira says it was his decision to reject Arsenal's medical proposal, claiming he was fully focused on the World Cup.

When asked if he decided to undergo his Gunners medical after the tournament, Torreira said: "Yes, we could have done things differently, but I did not want to think about other things.

"The World Cup is important and being part of this squad meant a lot to me.

"But now I have more time my future will be very clear.

"The important thing is that I'm happy to have been part of this squad and this World Cup, so I thank all the people who accompanied us."

Torreira will become Unai Emery's fourth summer signing.

The midfielder will follow Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno and Sokratis Papastathopoulos to the Emirates as Emery looks to mount a Premier League title charge this season.
