Despite looking very strong, they failed to overcome Uruguay in a tightly-fought World Cup battle that ended 2-1.

Edinson Cavani netted a stunning curling effort to win the match – leaving Portuguese fans in tears.

Uruguay barely managed any actual shots on goal throughout the night – but Cavani was clinical with his two chances.

Pepe managed to claw a goal back, roaring with joy as he celebrated in front of the cameras.

Ronaldo tried to rally his teammates after Cavani’s second sublime finish.

His efforts fell short however, with teammates failing to net again.

"Cracking finish from Cavani, one of their 3 million people.”

Ronaldo's status naturally meant scores of fans flocked to social media to poke fun at the superstar.

Mutugi Gatubo shared a video of Suarez waving while grinning to the camera, along with the caption "Suarez waving goodbye to Ronaldo".

Exciting from start to finish and riddled with chances, the Uruguay Portugal epic will go down as one of the games of the tournament.

Uruguay will take on France in the quarter finals after they clinched it 4-3 against Argentina.
