Starsport understands Jose Mourinho wants to add Bale to his squad in this transfer window but his hopes of landing a deal depends on whether Real Madrid decide to sell.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho will be allowed to splash the cash if the 28-year-old is made available.

Old Trafford money men have reportedly allocated in excess of £100m to spend if Bale is put up for sale.

Bale - frustrated at a lack of regular starts - hinted at a move away from Real Madrid after his match-winning display in the 3-1 Champions League win against Liverpool.

He said: “I feel like I deserved to start because I’ve been playing very well.

"I’ve playing well since Christmas and any player would want to start.

"For me personally, I feel I should be playing week-in and week-out and I haven’t been.

"I haven’t been playing as much as I would like and I’m going to have to sit down with everybody at a big table in the summer and seriously consider what move I’m going to make next.

"I feel like there’s still a lot more to give for me and that’s why I need to be playing week-in and week-out, that’s what I need.”

Bale was expected to leave the club after falling out of favour under Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman, however, quit the Bernabeu in the wake of their Champions League success and Julen Lopetegui was appointed as his replacement.

As a result, Bale’s future will likely depend on whether Lopetegui wants to retain his services.

Speaking earlier this month, Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett said he wanted to hold talks with Real Madrid bigwig Florentino Perez.

Manchester United Transfer News: Gareth Bale faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid

"I think we have to have a chat with Real Madrid and see where we're going,” he said.

"He wants a better year than he had last year. He wants to play more, and that's paramount to him.

"I think he's one of the top three or four players on earth. For somebody like him, he has to play. It's not about money.”

Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in 2013 and is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2022.

Ex-Spurs striker Jermain Defoe has urged his former team-mate to return to English football.

"I would love to see him back in the Premier League, I think everyone would be excited about that," Defoe said.

"He has been linked with everyone. There is talk about him staying in Madrid, I've seen Chelsea, Liverpool and Man United. More United than any other club but I've even seen [Man] City.

"The Premier League suits him. If he came back there would be a massive buzz.

"Coming back after what he has achieved at Madrid and bringing that experience to another big club and to the players there, I think it would be massive.

"He needs to play. It was interesting from his interview after the Champions League final, I have never seen him like that.

"It was almost out of character, he normally keeps things close to his chest and doesn't say how he feels. He is a nice boy who usually gets his head down and plays.

"It was almost like he has had enough. He has said he needs to play football. I can imagine when he said that, all the top managers and chairmen would have been like: 'OK, bang, who is his agent?'"
