The Brazil international midfielder completed a medical yesterday and has agreed a five-year contract, according to reports.

Starsport understands Manchester United will pay the Ukrainian club around £52.5m.

Fred will be the first arrival at Old Trafford in this summer's transfer window.

He could be handed the No.16 shirt - vacated by the retiring Michael Carrick - or Juan Mata's No.8 if the Spaniard moves up to No.10.

Fred travelled to the club's Carrington HQ after playing at Anfield in an international friendly on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was coy about his plans after the 2-0 win over Croatia but he was spotted entering United's training ground yesterday morning.

Speaking after Brazil's fixture, he said: "I'm going to talk to the people, meet my friends.

"I still do not know where I'm going. I'll still to talk to my agents to find out the reality of it.

"I want to focus only on the national team. It's a unique time, the World Cup.

"We have to try to forget things from outside."

Fred has been selected in Brazil's World Cup squad but Jose Mourinho was eager to get a deal across the line before he jets off to Russia.

Brazil boss Tite urged United to complete a deal for his midfield general before the tournament begins.

"Something like this speculation is inevitable when you're meeting in the summer and players are always thinking of their careers," he said.

"What we say is please resolve it as soon as possible so your head is back with us and focused on the national team.

"But if I was the manager of a club team, I would be looking to sign him!"

Mourinho needs to bolster his squad after finishing 19 points behind locals rivals Manchester City in the Premier League last season.

But former Tottenham and England defender Michael Dawson believes more signings are needed if they are to challenge Pep Guardiola's men.

"I look at Manchester United, and think they're going to have to sign more than just Fred to close the gap on Manchester City," he said on talkSPORT.

"I just think they're so far ahead of any other team. I really do, and they just keep going.

"And if you've got a bottomless pit like they have, how do you get closer? If someone spends £100m, they'll spend £200m."

Fred was a January target for City but they failed to finalise a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Premier League champions retained an interest but switched their focus to Napoli ace Jorginho after catching wind of United's pursuit.

Belo Horizonte-born Fred joined Shakhtar Donetsk from Internacional in 2013 for €15m.

The seven-cap Brazil ace has chipped in with 15 goals and 15 assists in 155 appearances for the Ukrainian giants.

He returned from a doping ban last year after testing positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide at the 2015 Copa America.

Fred could soon be followed through the door by Porto right-back Diogo Dalot.

He is currently in England and could soon be put through a medical when the club finalise a deal with the Portuguese champions.
