GET well soon messages have poured in for Sir Alex Ferguson after the Manchester United legend underwent "emergency surgery" for a brain haemorrhage.

The 13-time Premier League winner was rushed to Royal Salford Hospital with a police escort on Saturday morning.

Ferguson, 76, was pictured at Old Trafford last weekend to hand long-time rival Arsene Wenger a gift on the Frenchman's final appearance as Arsenal boss at the stadium.

A statement from Manchester United read: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."

Well wishes flooded in from across sport and football once the news broke.

Former Manchester United players, rival clubs and thousands of fans left well wishes for the iconic manager.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who Ferguson signed for Manchester as a teenager in 2003, tweeted a picture of their pair with a message which read: "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend. Be strong, Boss!"

Meanwhile, Pele also sent his support to the iconic Scot. He wrote: "I woke up to hear that Sir Alex Ferguson is in hospital. A @ManUtd man through and through. Get well soon, Sir Alex."

David Beckham, Peter Schmeichel and Andrew Cole all offered their support for the icon and his family.

Ex-England skipper Becks posted a picture of him with Ferguson from his school days.

His message read: "Keep fighting Boss.. Sending prayers and love to Cathy and the whole family x"

Liverpool, Ferguson's greatest rivals, posted a lengthy message in honour of the Scot.

It read: "The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital.

"A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery.

"In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family."
