Joe Thompson’s second-half strike rescued Rochdale from relegation as Keith Hill’s men survived the drop with a 1-0 win against Charlton.
Oldham’s draw at Northampton meant Dale rose out of the bottom four and leapfrogged their neighbours.
The home side opened well and settled and went close in the seventh minute when Joe Aribo conceded a free-kick for a foul on Oliver Rathbone 20 yards from goal. Callum Camps’ free-kick was parried by Ben Amos and Ian Henderson seized on the loose ball but fired against the post from close range.
Aribo fired a shot straight at Dale goalkeeper Josh Lillis but the home side had the lion’s share of chances in the first half, Amos called upon again to keep out a Ryan Delaney header.
The second half was a similar story with Dale on the front foot. Camps saw a 20-yard drive pushed away by Amos.
The breakthrough came in the 69th minute, substitute Thompson pouncing on a loose ball in the Charlton area and drilling a low drive wide into the net.
