Bentley hails keeper Barry Roche as clean sheet keeps Morecambe in League Two

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley paid tribute to shot-stopper Barry Roche after the Shrimps secured their Football League status with a 0-0 draw at Coventry.

Roche pulled off a number of fine saves as Morecambe got the point they needed to send Barnet down on goal difference.

He tipped away Michael Doyle’s powerful long-range effort after six minutes before producing an instinctive save to keep out Jonson Clarke-Harris on 39 minutes.

Bentley said: “Barry Roche was unbelievable today with the saves he made, they have been vital saves that has made the difference to our season.

“We stepped up to the plate today and got what we needed.

“It has been the worst week of my life in football. We let ourselves down last week but got the job done today.

“I am delighted for the boys, this is a massive achievement for us.

“We had a little go at them in the second half before we saw the game out.

“We sat in and did what we needed to do, they got what they wanted and we got what we wanted.

“The fans were superb in the second half. We are going to enjoy this and be positive as we look to improve next year.

“There was a lot riding on today, it is a massive result for us and a great day for the club.”

Kevin Ellison missed a great chance to give the visitors the lead when Lee Burge got the better of him in a one-on-one on 52 minutes.

Roche then got down well to save from Tom Bayliss after 74 minutes and Clarke-Harris headed over three minutes later, before Morecambe held on in a tense finish.

Coventry boss Mark Robins called on his side to embrace their play-off experience as they set up a date with Notts County.

“The young players have  got to take this in their stride,” he said.

“We beat Notts County on the first game of the season and lost at their place. It is about how people handle the experience of the play-offs.

“There was a lot at stake and they made it difficult for us; it was a hot day today and sometimes that takes the sting out of games.

“Their keeper has made two unbelievable saves and we had chances which we did not take.

“However, much you want to push for a winner there tired legs and minds after a long season.

“The first part is done and we have got make sure we are right for the Notts County games.

“We know what Notts County are capable of doing, it is going to be interesting.

“It is a great experience for everybody and we have to take it in our stride and learn from it.”
