Martin Allen buoyant after Barnet set up dramatic final day

Barnet boss Martin Allen insisted his side fully deserved the three points as they kept their hopes of Football League survival alive with a 1-0 victory at fellow strugglers Morecambe.

It was a must-win game for the Bees while Morecambe only needed a point to be safe.

But it was the visitors who took the spoils thanks to Alex Nicholls’ late goal to set up a dramatic final day.

Allen, who has overseen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the Bees since taking over as boss, said: “It was probably the best performance since I have been here.

“Everyone put a shift in and we dominated.

“We thought if we kept going as we were an opportunity would come our way and in the end it was a brilliant goal that won us the game.

“After we scored all our players put their heads in the way and their bodies on the line and we went on to pick up a vital win.

“We have a great group of players here and I have really, really enjoyed working with them.

“I knew we were going to win to be honest. I came to watch Morecambe here a couple of weeks ago and I knew we would have enough.

“When I came in I said the main objective was to make sure we were in it by the time the final game came around and we have done that and we need to smash it at home (against Chesterfield) next week.”

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley was disappointed with his side’s poor performance.

He said: “When we needed to come up trumps we didn’t and no players really came out of the game with any credit.

“It was always going to be a tight game but we lacked composure in the final third which has been the story of our season.

“There were times when it looked easier to set up a scoring opportunity but we put in a sloppy pass.

“Our decision making and quality was poor and that always means you will be under pressure.

“In the end the only quality we saw in the game was their goal and that is what mattered.”
