Derek Adams could not hide his delight at Plymouth’s win

Plymouth boss Derek Adams was delighted with his League One play-off chasing side’s dramatic 2-1 win over fourth-placed Rotherham at Home Park.

Argyle player of the year Graham Carey won and converted a stoppage-time spot-kick as his side rallied from 1-0 down.

Joel Grant had earlier cancelled out Richie Towell’s opener before Carey’s winner, leaving Plymouth two points off sixth-placed Scunthorpe – who they visit on Tuesday – with two matches remaining.

Adams said: “We go to Scunthorpe on Tuesday in confident mood. We had to win today and now we take it to the last two games of the season.

“I thought we started the game very well on the front foot and kept a lot of good possession.

“We were probably a bit unfortunate not to have gone ahead earlier. We made a mistake and allowed them to go ahead in the first half.

“It gave them a foothold in the game. We knew that at half-time if we kept on probing we would get chances in the game. We kept on plugging away and scored a very good goal.

“In the end we get the penalty kick and Graham puts it in the top corner.”

The game was 1-1 when home goalkeeper Remi Matthews made a crucial 68th-minute save to deny Millers substitute Jon Taylor as he broke through one-on-one.

“Remi was brilliant today and made some great saves,” Adams added.

“It was an outstanding performance and I was delighted again with the performance of David Fox in the centre of the park keeping things ticking over for us.”

Rotherham boss Paul Warne was not happy with the penalty decision and Caolan Lavery’s goal ruled out for offside.

He said: “My view on the penalty is Will Vaulks went to ground which is always dangerous.

“I am not criticising him because he plays with his heart on his sleeve. I thought he got the ball, but the lad has gone down and the referee from his angle thinks it is a penalty. I don’t from my angle but it is all about opinions.

“I have have watched it back on video and he (Lavery) looks on side.

“To score with two minutes to go and it doesn’t count and then they go up the other end and get the goal they need.

“It is hugely disappointing because I thought we played really well.”
