Coleman confident of doing well in League One after sealing title

John Coleman hopes Stanley can take League One by storm after clinching the League Two title with a 1-0 win over Lincoln City.

Jordan Clark scored the winner in the 35th minute, scrambling home a Sean McConville cross, in front of 4,753 – the biggest crowd ever at the Wham Stadium.

Stanley’s prolific scorer Billy Kee, who has 26 goals this season, had a penalty saved by Ryan Allsop in the 45th minute and, while Lincoln pressed after the break, they could not find the equaliser. The Imps need a point to confirm their play-off place.

“I am absolutely delighted and I couldn’t be prouder of the players,” said Coleman.

“We had the heartache two years ago where we missed out on automatic promotion in the final game of the season and we didn’t want to make the same mistake this season as the title got closer.

“The lads were brilliant, they chased every ball today and gave their all as they have done all season. I can’t fault their effort and endeavour all season.”

He is confident his side can make the step up – playing in the third tier of English football for the first time since 1960.

“League One will be hard. I don’t think there is a lot of difference between the middle to the bottom of League One to League Two but there definitely is to the middle to the top.

“But we have defied the odds, with our budget and the structure of our club, to win the title this season so we will see what we can do in League One.

“We have players on longer contracts now so instead of replacing players as we have in previous seasons, we will be adding to the squad which will make a huge difference.”

Imps boss Danny Cowley was gutted his side didn’t get the point they needed to secure the top seven spot.

“I think firstly you have to take time to congratulate Accrington, they have done it against the odds,” said Cowley.

“For us, I was disappointed with the first half, we looked lethargic and short of intensity.

“In the second half we improved dramatically but just couldn’t find that all-important goal.

“We knew, to achieve what we wanted, it was never going to be easy and now it’s a big week and we will dust ourselves and look forward to what is a massive game against Yeovil next week.

“We have got to find a way to win.”
