Elgin draw enough to seal Montrose promotion at expense of Peterhead

Montrose held their nerve to pip Peterhead to promotion on a dramatic final day of the Scottish League Two campaign.

They required just a point against Elgin to secure only their second league title in their 139-year history.

The visitors threatened to spoil their party when Shane Sutherland struck on the stroke of half-time.

But Montrose came out firing at the start of the second half and Jamie Redman levelled in the 50th minute to seal a 1-1 draw which was enough to secure League One football next season.

Peterhead had to settle for a play-off spot despite beating second-bottom Edinburgh City 2-1.

The Blue Toon were heading for promotion at half-time as Pat Scullion’s fourth-minute own goal gave them the lead after just four minutes.

Gareth Rodger equalised eight minutes from time before Scott Brown’s last-minute winner for Peterhead, who join Stenhousemuir and Stirling Albion in the play-offs.

Clyde missed the chance to finish in the top four after losing 2-1 at home to third-bottom Berwick.

Jack Hamilton scored either side of Jack Boyle’s 57th-minute equaliser in a match which saw Berwick reduced to 10 men following Steven Notman’s 73rd-minute red card.

Stirling and Stenhousemuir played out a 1-1 draw.

After Colin McMenamin gave the visitors the lead in the 38th minute, Peter MacDonald equalised for Stirling 16 minutes from time.

Blair Henderson scored twice in the opening five minutes to ensure Annan, who had Owen Moxon sent off, won 2-0 at bottom side Cowdenbeath.
