The Ibrox club have held talks with Gerrard’s representatives about taking over from Graeme Murty at the end of the season.

They are hopeful agreement can be reached with the Champions League winner, but inside sources warned: “It is still far from a done deal.”

Director of football Mark Allen has drawn up a shortlist of candidates, with Gerrard the frontrunner.

The 37-year-old hung up his boots after a 12-month stint with LA Galaxy and has spent the time since cutting his teeth with the Reds’ Under-18 side.

Rangers chairman Dave King was at Anfield on Tuesday as Liverpool took on Roma in their Champions League semi-final showdown, a match where Gerrard was working as a television pundit.

English Championship side Ipswich are also interested in Gerrard, and he has previously turned down the Oxford United job.

It’s understood there have been discussions about personal terms and playing budgets at Rangers, but nothing has been agreed.

There have also been claims that former Scotland captain and Gerrard’s old team-mate Gary McAllister could become his assistant at Ibrox.

Ex-Liverpool team-mate Charlie Adam believes it would be a bold move.

"It would be a good appointment,” said Adam. “The people he has around him are very good coaches and have been in the game along time.”

A move for Gerrard could be seen as a gamble. Celtic tried a similar move when they took on John Barnes back in 1999 but that ended in tears with Kenny Dalglish left to hold the fort.

Rangers are pushing on with their summer signing policy.

It’s understood Scott Arfield had a medical in England yesterday ahead of a move to Ibrox from Burnley, while Scotland keeper Allan McGregor is expected to agree a return in the next few days, leaving Hull City.

Meanwhile, Jak Alnwick is set to quit Rangers this summer. The goalie has grown increasingly frustrated at his lack of first-team action since moving to Ibrox in January last year from Port Vale.
