Kevin Nolan is backing his players to bring success to Notts County

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan believes his side have the opportunity to exceed expectation this season after thrashing Yeovil 4-1.

Efforts from Dan Jones, Elliott Hewitt and Lewis Alessandra plus a Tom James own goal guaranteed the Magpies a play-off place.

Earlier this term, Nolan’s team were right in the thick of the title race but with his side still in with a mathematical shout of nicking an automatic-promotion place, he believes that County should be proud of their efforts.

“We had an indifferent spell but we’ve come through that and the lads want to show people what they’re about,” said Nolan.

“This team wants success and I’m delighted that we’ve secured a play-off place and are still in with a chance of automatic promotion as well.

“At the beginning of the season, we would have loved the play-offs, so we’ve achieved that and still have more to aim for.

“We need to take momentum into the play-offs, if that’s where we end up, and it’s nice to be in the mix for automatic [promotion] – there should be some drama ahead and we’ll enjoy it.

“I still remember the promotions I had as a player – the best times of your life – and it would be special for the players here to achieve that.”

In first-half stoppage time, the floodgates opened as Jones’ strike from the edge of the area deflected into the net past Glovers goalkeeper Jonny Maddison.

The Magpies then produced a second-half blitz, sparked by James blasting a Liam Noble delivery into his own net.

In the 70th minute, Hewitt coolly slotted past Maddison after cutting inside while three minutes later, Alessandra dribbled past two defenders before tucking away his team’s fourth.

In the final minute of normal time, Alex Fisher bagged a consolation effort for Yeovil, converting from a free-kick.

Glovers boss Darren Way is bidding to keep his team in League Two, still unable to relax with Yeovil only six points ahead of the drop zone.

“We’re not mathematically safe but I’m more concerned about our performances over the remaining games and the players need to look at that,” he said.

“We had a performance for 45 minutes but after that the lads’ heads went down and they weren’t on their game.

“I thought we played well in the first half and we were unlucky to go in a goal down.

“The players did exactly as they were asked and stuck to their task before their goal was deflected in.

“Then we had the own goal early in the second half and perhaps, after that, my young players struggled to handle the pressure.”
