James Henry earns manager praise as Oxford edge Doncaster

Karl Robinson hailed the impact of James Henry as he scored another vital goal in Oxford United’s League One survival bid.

Henry came off the bench to head the only goal of the game as Oxford beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0 to move six points clear of the bottom four.

Robinson said: “James Henry in some ways has almost single-handedly kept us up, with the goal against Southend, the goal against Peterborough and the goal again today and I don’t think the subs have made too much of an impression in recent weeks.

“Jamo probably had a mind to knock on my door in the middle of the week but he has had a back problem in the week.

“We just felt like saving him for half an hour was a good plan and he’s always got a goal in him.”

Robinson labelled his players “men” for the fight they showed in battling out a much-needed win.

He said: “The players today were men.

“People may have thought that my players can’t fight, that a Karl Robinson side are all free flowing and lots of energy – but you’ve seen a different side to my players and they can fight.”

“I’m so happy for the travelling fans who turned up in good numbers and I’m learning about how good the travelling fans are and how important they are for the club.

“I know they’ve been through good times and bad times.”

Darren Ferguson bemoaned a lack of clinical touch from his Doncaster Rovers side in a game he felt they should not have lost.

Rovers had excellent chances through Alfie May, John Marquis and Matty Blair but could not find the net.

“It was a game we shouldn’t have lost,” Ferguson said. “We had the clearer chances in the game. We didn’t take those clear chances.

“There weren’t many in the game but the ones there were fell to us.

“It was important that we took one before they did. We had to deal with that goal better. I don’t think they troubled us too much.

“In the second half we came on strong and we were the dominant team, but we just weren’t clinical enough.

“I felt a lot of the stuff we did was good. It was what we wanted and the energy levels were good.”

Ferguson felt his side should have had two penalties for fouls on Jordan Houghton and May.

He said: “I think we should have had two penalties. We’ve had a look at both of them but we didn’t get the decisions and they are key decisions.

“If the one on Jordan Houghton is not a penalty, it’s a dive. But he hasn’t booked him, so what is it?”
