Coleman praises Stanley players for professional attitude after win at Wycombe

Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman believes his players put to bed any suggestions they spent the week celebrating promotion after their 4-0 hammering of Wycombe Wanderers.

The visitors showed exactly they’ll be in League One next season after taking apart a Wycombe side that is still hoping to follow them up in the coming weeks.

A point at Newport on Tuesday will confirm Stanley as champions, while the Chairboys have held on to third, although they are now only a point ahead of fourth-placed Exeter.

Coleman said: “I can’t praise our lads enough, they’ve been absolutely magnificent all season.

“People have questioned our motivation today, saying we’ve been partying all week, when we haven’t.

“The harsh reality is we celebrated an historic promotion on Tuesday and a couple of lads went out for a drink on the Wednesday.

“They went to bed at the appropriate time and then they trained hard on Thursday and on Friday and they prepared right for the game.

“So that was an answer to the people who were doubting us.

“We possibly found Wycombe at the right time – they’ve had a lot of illness in the camp and obviously big [Adebayo] Akinfenwa wasn’t there, a great player and a good talisman for them.

“They looked a little bit jaded today and we were able to capitalise on that, but they’ve a very good team with a great manager in Gareth Ainsworth and I hope they follow us up.”

Kayden Jackson opened the scoring for Accrington by walking the ball into the net after an error by Wycombe goalkeeper Scott Brown, who was later beaten by his namesake’s stunning half-volley.

Sean McConville’s cultured finish made the result safe for Stanley before Offrande Zanzala’s stoppage-time penalty rounded off a superb performance.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth said: “Lady luck is smiling on us today because we didn’t deserve any fortune today. We didn’t work hard enough.

“The boys are devastated in there, but all I’ll say is Accrington are worthy champions of this league.

“A team hasn’t come here and done that to us all season and that’s why they’re going to be champions.

“They were outstanding in the way they closed, the way they won the second balls, they defended solidly.

“They were absolutely resilient and we were under-par today and that combination has ended with a 4-0 home defeat.

“It’s still well in our hands and hopefully a couple of injured players will be back next week and then we can start where we left off from our eight-game unbeaten run.

“Dominic Gape has been ill, Luke O’Nien was ill, Bayo was out, Sido Jombati was out and Anthony Stewart, so we’ve got some big players to come back.”
