St Mirren celebrate in style after beating Morton

Goals from Danny Mullen and Lewis Morgan ensured St Mirren’s title party went to plan as they defeated Morton 2-1 in a hard-fought Renfrewshire derby.
St Mirren were confirmed as Championship winners for the first time in 12 years last weekend and they were presented with the trophy following Saturday’s visit of Morton.
The Buddies made certain those celebrations were not dampened by a lacklustre performance in their final home game of the season, although they were given a scare by their local rivals.
It took the hosts 10 minutes to take the lead with Mullen firing past Conor Brennan, but they then found themselves on the back foot as Morton went on the offensive.
Gary Oliver was unlikely not to level with a superb effort which came back off the crossbar, but the visitors would not be denied and Michael Doyle’s made it 1-1 in the 30th minute with a close-range header.
Morton continued to push and Oliver drew a good save from Craig Samson with a thunderous shot.
Saints were under the cosh but they battled their way back into the game and only a brilliant Brennen stop denied Cammy Smith before the break.
Brennan could do little as Saints did reclaim the lead in the 72nd minute though, Morgan firing home to finish off a rapid counter-attack and clinch victory for the champions.
