Bowyer wants Charlton to secure play-off place in style

Charlton Athletic caretaker manager Lee Bowyer insists his side must concentrate on themselves after the 2-0 win at Shrewsbury Town lifted the London club back into the play-off places.

Late goals from Jason Pearce and Josh Magennis secured maximum points for Charlton.

Third-placed Shrewsbury are now five points adrift of the automatic promotion places with just four matches remaining.

Bowyer, whose side head to fellow play-off contenders Portsmouth this weekend, said: “We know that there’s going to be three more tough games to go and there’s going to be changes.

“But all we need to do is concentrate on ourselves and win the games. If we win the games, we’re in the play-offs, so it’s as simple as that.

“That’s what I’ve just said to them. Enjoy what’s happened tonight, but get yourselves ready for Saturday because we’ve got to do it all again.”

He added: “We’ve got to go to Portsmouth and I know from my own experience that’s not an easy place to go, but we’ll be ready and we’ll get our recovery right.”

Pearce headed Charlton in front in the 74th minute from Jake Forster-Caskey’s free kick before Magennis doubled the advantage deep into stoppage time.

“I was just grateful that he scored for his work rate,” said Bowyer of Charlton’s Northern Ireland international striker.

“It’s a reward, I think, for the effort he put in tonight.

“He won his headers, he held the ball up. His work rate was unreal. I saw him sprinting back in the 88th minute into midfield to make their player make a mistake on the ball. Then he got his goal which he thoroughly deserved.”

Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst believes his side will now probably be involved in the play-offs after being unable to cut the gap between themselves and the top two.

“I thought we played some decent stuff first half, so I’m not going to be too critical of this team,” said Hurst.

“We’re disappointed we’ve lost the game. That probably means it will be play-offs and, as I’ve just said to them there, would we have all took that at the start of the season – and I think we all know what the answer would have been.”

Hurst added: “I felt that some of our play was good, some of the link play with Sam (Jones) making his full debut, and I thought even towards the end of the game we’ve had opportunities to put good balls in the box and too many times they get a block on it or things like that.

“I think early season certainly that’s the type of game we would have probably gone 1-0 up and seen it through.

“Just of late, we’re just lacking that little bit of maybe belief even, I think that’s what it sorts of looks like, and then when they get the goal we huffed and puffed a little bit, but ultimately we couldn’t get that equaliser to maybe give a chance for a grandstand finish.”
