Napoli dropped two points in their Serie A title bid as they were held to a goalless draw by European hopefuls AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday.
The visitors extended their unbeaten run to five matches in the process and the point sees Gli Azzurri move to within three points of leaders Juventus, who take on Sampdoria in the early evening kick-off.
The home side had the better of the first-half chances but Giacomo Bonaventura saw his low effort palmed away by Pepe Reina as early as the fourth minute as the Rossoneri looked for an opener.
At the other end, Napoli top scorer Dries Mertens came close after 16 minutes as he collected Lorenzo Insigne’s through ball but Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off a good save to deny him.
Milan almost broke the deadlock six minutes before the break but visiting goalkeeper Reina kept out Hakan Calhanoglu’s chance before Mateo Musacchio found the back of the Napoli net in an effort that was chalked out for being offside.
Both sides battled for an opener that never came in the second half with Allan and Jose Callejon having attempts blocked for Napoli in the opening 10 minutes before Insigne’s late effort was saved.
Lucas Biglia had a couple of efforts thwarted in the final exchanges as Milan looked to break the deadlock at the death but the spoils were shared.
