Neil Aspin relieved as Port Vale earn win over Lincoln

Port Vale manager Neil Aspin hailed his side’s 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Lincoln as a massive result.

In a tightly-contested game at Vale Park, Antony Kay scored the only goal midway through the second half, rising highest to nod home a free-kick.

The result sees the Valiants move nine points clear of the League Two relegation zone and Aspin is counting down to the end of the season.

He said: “It’s been like living a nightmare the last few months, ever since we got into January, with what happened then and with results not going our way.

“We’ve lost a lot of games by the odd goal, or the two games we’ve been winning going into injury time and conceded, so we’ve had a lot of kicks in the teeth and had to keep going.

“We should have had a lot more points well before this game and all those things take a toll on you and the supporters, but today we’ll enjoy the win.

“It’s such a relief as well coming after last week’s disappointment where we felt the whole world was against us.

“But today, all praise must go to the players. I thought they were excellent, they competed from start to finish and were under pressure to get a result against a team doing really well.

“You know that if you’re going to get anything against Lincoln, you have to compete, you have to be physically strong and you’ve got to play for the full 90 minutes.

“It’s a massive win for us and I’m really pleased for the players. I think they did the club and the supporters proud.”

Imps boss Danny Cowley was frustrated with his side’s showing after the break as they suffered an EFL Trophy hangover.

He said: “We’re disappointed, particularly with our second-half performance. It was always going to be a tight game, but second half we looked very lethargic, lacking the intensity we pride ourselves on.

“I thought we gave the ball away in our own half, we gave silly fouls away and everything looked an effort for us and I think too many are feeling sorry for themselves.

“It’s never easy to come away from home. There’s never going to be lots of goals in it, so you know the first goal is important.

“We’ve come back from 1-0 down many times before but I was disappointed with our response after conceding what was a poor goal.

“We’d given the ball away in our own half and then a foul we didn’t need to give away and then they’ve got across in front of us.

“We didn’t do what we set out to do and we came up short. We’ve been beaten today, but I think we’ve beaten ourselves.”
