Gareth Ainsworth admits Wycombe rode their luck on way to victory at Yeovil

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth admitted his side got more than they deserved as they narrowly beat Yeovil 1-0 at Huish Park.

Substitute Randell Williams’ goal 11 minutes from time was enough to see Wycombe stay third and extend their advantage over the chasing pack to four points.

Yeovil more than played their part as both Otis Khan and Tom James hit the woodwork with free-kicks in either half.

Glovers forward Alex Fisher also had a goal ruled out for offside before Williams sidefooted home from the edge of the area with Wycombe’s first shot on target.

Ainsworth said: “There wasn’t much between the two teams today, if anything Yeovil had the lion’s share of the chances.

“It’s about sticking it in the net and Randell Williams scores his first career goal. It’s a fantastic moment for him and a really important moment for Wycombe Wanderers.

“It was a very important goal. Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football and sometimes you get a little bit more than you deserve. I think it was the latter today.

“I had to blast the team at half-time. We weren’t good enough by any stretch of the imagination.

“I thought the introduction of Nathan Tyson and Craig Mackail-Smith added to us, two really experienced campaigners who’ve been in this position before.

“We just have to keep adding points to the total. Nobody knows what it’s going to take this year. It’s going to be very tight and go right to the wire.

“The ironic thing is we’re probably the second top scorers in the league. We get criticised for leaking plenty so a 1-0 win away from home is something of a rarity. It’s a very welcome collector’s item.”

Yeovil manager Darren Way rued his side’s one lapse in concentration.

Way said: “Football can sometimes be a cruel game. When you look at the overall performance I think they had one shot on target and it went in.

“I have to make sure the players grow belief from this performance even though we lost. We didn’t get what we deserved.

“It was a case of end product. The group are giving absolutely everything. Wycombe had to win the game. We knew it was going to be quite open, but they did a professional job.

“It really is about blocking and tackling and the one time we didn’t do that they score from the edge of the box.

“We came so close. It’s disappointing but at the same time I’m proud of my players for the effort they put in.

“We had a number of chances that on another day would’ve gone in. I haven’t seen the disallowed goal, but the players tell me it was onside.

“If there’s a 50-50 it always seems to go to the opposition. I just feel the level of refereeing is low at the moment.”
