Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen is entering a new bracket – Danny Murphy

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has moved into the "top bracket of playmakers" this season, according to Danny Murphy.

The 26-year-old Danish international has been enjoying another productive season with Tottenham as they look to end a 10-year trophy drought.

His performances have been widely lauded, with many suggesting he is among the best in his position, and Murphy – who spent two seasons at Spurs – concurs.

"Tottenham's Christian Eriksen is starting to move into the top bracket of playmakers," he wrote in the Evening Standard.

"Eriksen is calm on the ball and seems to make the right decisions.

"It is vital that Spurs are able to hang on to him in the long term, which I am confident they will be able to do. As good as Eriksen is, who would pay the sort of fee that chairman Daniel Levy is likely to ask for?

"It is worth noting, though, that he has only two years left on his contract so the sooner Spurs agree a new one, the better with the summer transfer window and World Cup on the horizon."

Eriksen the creator

Since joining Spurs in the summer of 2013 from Ajax, Eriksen has created 447 chances for his teammates, with only Mesut Ozil (465) of Arsenal producing more.

Last season Eriksen created no fewer than 15 goals as Spurs finished runners-up to champions Chelsea in the Premier League. Only Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, with 18, registered more assists.

So far during this campaign he's produced eight assists in the league and bagged 10 goals as the Lilywhites fight for a top-four finish.

Overall the Danish playmaker has featured across 219 matches for Spurs in all competitions and been involved in 122 goals, 56 of which Eriksen scored himself.

Eriksen, who has struck three times in two Premier League games, will be hoping to keep up his impressive recent goal scoring form up for Spurs, as they take on league leaders Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday.
