Late own goal sums up Bury’s season – Ryan Lowe

Adam Thompson’s late own goal summed up Bury’s season, admitted boss Ryan Lowe, after a 1-0 defeat to fellow League One strugglers Walsall left the Shakers needing a miracle to stay up.

Thompson headed Luke Leahy’s 89th-minute cross past his own keeper Joe Murphy to leave basement boys Bury 13 points from safety with only five games to play.

The Shakers created the game’s best chances, only for James Hanson to twice head wide and Ryan Cooney to fluff his lines from close range.

Lowe said: “That 100 per cent sums up our season. When the luck is not with you, it’s not with you and an 89th-minute own goal is tough to take.

“I have to give the lads a bit of credit today for the reaction I got from them and the football that we played. It’s been a horrible week but they gave it their all out there for us today.

“But both boxes win you games and we’ve said that many a time. A lack of quality and a lack of decision-making has cost us today as we have had enough chances to win that game 2-0 or 3-0.

“We had 10 chances, five on target, but my biggest gripe is not putting the ball in the net. People say unlucky, it’s not unlucky for me.

“You’ve got to put the ball in the back of the net – it’s what you are paid to do. And we haven’t done it over the course of the season since we lost Jermaine Beckford.

“Goals win you games and we haven’t got goals in us at the moment.”

Walsall, meanwhile, recorded a vital first victory under new boss Dean Keates to move five points clear of the drop zone ahead of another big game at relegation rivals Oldham on Wednesday.

Keates said: “For us, it’s about points. If we got a performance on top that would have been a bonus but the lads ground something out.

“I thought in the first half we were the better team but second half, if I’m honest, they probably had the better of it.

“It was a little bit edgy in the second half. We got into good areas but the final ball was not good enough or people were passing up opportunities to have a shot. I think that is maybe a little bit of a confidence thing.

“But we kept going. I know it’s an own goal but we will take it and to keep a clean sheet, we are over the moon with that.

“From the day I walked through the door, safety was always in our hands and it still is. And that’s all we want, we want to be able to control it.”
