Derek Adams delighted as Plymouth edge Peterborough to go fifth

Plymouth Argyle boss Derek Adams admitted his delighted as the Pilgrims beat League One play-off rivals Peterborough United 2-1 at Home Park to soar to fifth.

Adams said: “It’s been a very good day for us. We’ve won again at home, scored two goals and beat a team that started the day above us to go fifth.”

Jack Marriott got Peterborough off to a flying start, scoring his 26th goal of the season.

Target man Ryan Taylor levelled with a superb glancing header and Graham Carey wrapped the game up with his stoppage-time penalty winner after the Posh were reduced to nine men.

Liam Shephard was red carded in the 75th minute for an off-the-ball incident and Steven Taylor was also sent off, receiving a second yellow for delaying Carey’s spot-kick at the death.

Adams said: “Marriott’s goal gave them a lift. Their threat is always on the counter with Marriott. He likes to play off the shoulder and has scored a lot of goals.

“We probably put too many crosses into the box which probably suited them because Peterborough defended well.

“You have got to give credit to Peterborough because they tried to sit in and frustrate over the 90 minutes.

“We have got patience and players who can open up defences. We knew that we would create chances.

“With six games to go we have got Portsmouth, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, who are up there, coming up and we also have to play Rochdale, who drew with Portsmouth today, so it’s a real tough run-in.

“To think we are fifth with six games to go. I always said judge us with six games to go, so that’s what we’ve done.

“We have been able to put ourselves in a fabulous position.

“The league campaign is over 46 games and it will go to the final game.

“The players are enjoying it and aiming for a play-off position.”

Frustrated Posh boss Steve Evans said: “If you look at the game we started really well, played some great football and we went in front.

“Jack Marriott is going to go for lots and lots of money. He is simply the best. He is just a natural goal scorer.

“When you look at the top goal scorers they are born with that little bit of gold dust and Jack Marriott was born with that little bit of gold dust.

“After that we should have had a second goal through George Cooper but he puts it just over the bar.

“They get a goal, which for me was against the run of play, but then Plymouth have a little spell and in the second half they have more of the ball than us.

“We’ve had a hard day today but we will come back fighting.

“We will wish Plymouth well, they are a good club but I think they will know they’ve rode their luck with some of the decisions they got – which we feel rightfully aggrieved about.

“Plymouth Argyle got a penalty and it is a penalty, there is no disputing that.

“We will appeal the Liam Shephard decision after I have watched a video replay.”
