Bowyer lauds hat-trick hero Delfouneso

Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer believes Nathan Delfouneso has the ability to score more frequently after he claimed the first hat-trick of his career in the 5-0 thrashing of Bradford.

The Seasiders put a difficult Easter period behind them in emphatic fashion as they moved themselves eight points clear of the relegation zone in League One.

Bowyer said: “It’s a credit to our boys for the response they showed.

“It wasn’t good enough over the Easter period. We’ve known all season we are capable of producing performances like that.

“We were ruthless and were very clinical.

“I’ve just been told that’s Nathan’s first hat-trick and in my opinion, with the ability he’s got he should be scoring more and that’s what we’ve demanded of him all season.

“I’d hate for him to get to the end of his career and go ‘I should have scored more goals’.

“We felt Nathan owed us a performance after the Doncaster game. He has to produce this week in week out.

“It was important for us to see out their reaction after half-time then we started to get back to how we can perform later on. That clean sheet was massive.

“There’s five games left, 15 points and I want to get as many as I possibly can.”

Delfouneso put Blackpool ahead with a powerful strike after 16 minutes before a superb individual effort by Viv Solomon-Otobor doubled the lead.

It was effectively game over after 29 minutes when Colin Daniel’s cut-back gave Delfouneso an easy finish from a few yards.

There was no let-up from the Seasiders in the second half, as Delfouneso completed his hat-trick with a header from Jimmy Ryan’s cross before a mistake by Colin Doyle gifted Sean Longstaff the hosts’ fifth.

Bradford manager Simon Grayson said: “Obviously hugely disappointed with the outcome of it all.

“I thought we started quite well but we go a goal down and it was almost as if that was us caving in again.

“We stopped doing the things that we’d done, which we’d asked them to do before the game. We asked them to play in their half because it’s a tough pitch.

“Every one of their players came out of the individual battles better than us. They chased us, they worked us and ran over the top of us.

“That’s frustrating because we have experience players who should be dealing with things better.

“Half-time was probably the angriest I’ve been as a manager for a long, long time.

“We came out, and there was a reaction, but again we make a stupid mistake for the fourth one taking extra touches.

“Basically it was back to what we had done in the last 30 minutes in the first half.”
