Adams delighted as four-star Plymouth return to play-off places

Plymouth boss Derek Adams was full of praise for his side as they swept back up to sixth in League One following a comprehensive 4-0 home win over Southend.

Argyle are now level on points with fifth-placed Scunthorpe, their opponents on Monday, following two goals apiece from Ruben Lameiras and Graham Carey.

Adams said: “We’re back up to sixth, delighted to be on 60 points at this stage of the season with seven games to go and we have just got to keep marching forward.”

Playmaker Carey could have had a hat-trick but his 74th-minute spot-kick flew off the top of the bar.

After Lameiras’ opener, Simon Cox missed a golden opportunity to level when Argyle keeper Remi Matthews could only parry Dru Yearwood’s thumping drive into his path.

Southend would rue that miss as Carey struck twice before missing the penalty, and Lameiras had the final word.

Adams said: “I thought we started the game very well, we got ourselves in the lead with a well-taken goal with a good passing move through the centre of the park.

“Ryan Taylor makes a great touch and it’s a fabulous finish from Ruben Lameiras and we just went on from there and grew in confidence to win convincingly.

“Everyone was going on about what a great run Southend were on but we knew they weren’t and we would cause them trouble today.

“We spoke about that, and how we could get ourselves into good areas where our creative players could cause them problems.

“Ryan led the line very well and caused the two central defenders a lot of trouble and I think they were glad to see him go off. As a centre-forward he gave us the platform to go forward.

“Ruben scored two goals today and Graham Carey should have had a hat-trick. It’s great they are scoring goals because they are very creative players.

“It was another accomplished performance and today again we had another fabulous crowd (11,965) to witness it.”

Southend boss Chris Powell said: “We played a very good team. Out of the games I have played so far, they are the best side we have played.

“We got off to the worst start possible, I knew there would be a reaction from them after losing last week at Charlton.

“I kept saying it was vitally important we stayed in the game. Best laid plans went awry early on so from that we were always on the back foot. They played particularly well.

“At 1-0 down the turning point was the chance from Dru and the rebound. You have to take those when you come to a side aspiring to be in the top six and who are a good side, particularly at home.

“They have been on a good run and we paid the price for that.

“The way we performed was not what I needed from my players today. I would have been amazed had we got anything from it because in the final third they showed their quality.

“They are a decent team and will be up there possibly fighting for the top six. Good thing for us is there is a quick turnaround.”

Southend host Gillingham on Monday.
