Goalkeeper James Montgomery was the hero for Gateshead as his late penalty save capped a strong individual performance and earned them a point in the 0-0 National League draw against Dagenham.
Dagenham striker Fejiri Okenabirhie forced an excellent save from Montgomery in the 15th minute when he struck the ball well from the edge of the box, but the Heed stopper tipped it round the left post.
Gateshead striker Jordan Burrow tried to lob the ball over Daggers goalkeeper Mark Cousins on the half-volley 10 minutes before the break, but it ended up nestling on the roof of the net.
Daniel Sparkes fired over for Dagenham early in the second half as both sides struggled to find a breakthrough before Mason Bloomfield shot just wide with 12 minutes remaining.
Bloomfield was brought down for a penalty in the 83rd minute by Jamal Fyfield but Montgomery pushed Jake Howells’ spot-kick wide as Gateshead held on for a point.
