Jones believes Luton win will help to silence critics

Luton boss Nathan Jones felt the 2-0 win over Barnet helped to silence any critics his promotion-chasing side might have.

Goals from Danny Hylton and James Collins saw the Hatters go back to the top of the table.

Jones said: “It was important because the media have really made a big thing about us not winning and getting draws and so on and so forth and I think we needed to shut a few people up and answer a few questions and we did.

“It was all set up for us today to lose the game, Martin Allen coming back, live on Sky, but we were outstanding from start to finish
.
“It’s not easy winning games here. They come, they set up, they’re 4-4-1-1, they don’t play like that normally, but they do for us.

“I’ve watched Sky this afternoon, I’ve had to knock it off, because people are dissecting what we do.

“They haven’t watched the games, we’re a brave side, we get on it, we play, we develop players here, we do well.

“They should be lauding that, but they don’t as they can’t wait to shoot you down, that’s the nature of society today and the nature of the pundits on Sky, so it’s real big win for us.”

Barnet boss Martin Allen felt his side needed to show character following the defeat.

He said: “When you are in this situation, the attitude of the players is key. You have to keep going, you can’t give up.

“We’ve got seven games to go. We’ve certainly got a group that are giving everything they’ve got and I would say that the competition for us now properly starts.

“We worked extremely hard to get Barnet Football Club promoted as champions in the Conference, to come up and play in this league, to play at grounds like this, in front of passionate crowds.

“The attraction, for me, was to try to keep Barnet in the Football League after all that hard work that got us there in the first place.

“Whatever happens, I want to enjoy days like this. I want to see the players give everything they can for the supporters.

“Hopefully we can pick up some wins. We’ve got seven game that I believe are now winnable.”

After a slow first half in which Bees keeper Craig Ross saved from Olly Lee, Hylton and Luke Berry, Town were ahead a minute after the break when Hylton headed home from close range.

Berry’s curler was tipped over by Ross, but Luton had their second after 68 minutes when Collins’ angled drive from the edge of the box found the net.

Hatters could have added to their tally, Lee’s piledriver turned over by Ross, who also finger-tipped Alan McCormack’s 40-yard shot away, with Scott Cuthbert heading inches off target.
