Dino Maamria sees positive signs despite losing start for Stevenage

Dino Maamria might have got off to a losing start as Stevenage boss but the Tunisian believes he has something work with at the Lamex following a 1-0 defeat to Colchester.

Mikael Mandron scored the only goal for the visitors as Maamria lost his first game in charge since replacing Darren Sarll.

But having only taken charge of the team two days earlier, Maamria was pleased with the attitude of his players and is confident they can build on the display.

He said: “I’ve been in the job two days and had two training sessions. I’ve tried to instil certain habits to start with possession and keep it simple.

“You don’t want to come in as a manager in two days and load them with loads of information. I know what type of football I want to play. I want to organise my team in a certain way, both in and out of possession.

“Of course, you’re not going to do that in two days but I thought in the first half, we looked like there’s a change in management.

“They ran hard but when they got the ball, they didn’t know what to do with it. There was no lack of effort and I thought they gave me everything and in the second half we were much better, especially after the subs we made.

“I thought we got on the ball and on the front foot and showed the kind of football we want to play.”

For Colchester boss John McGreal it was an important result as the U’s won for the first time since mid-February.

And following a draw at Morecambe last time out, he was pleased for Mandron to have got back on the scoresheet.

He said: “I just felt the two away games would be ideal after the way things went at home where we haven’t had the rub of the green or performed well.

“We were resolute and the clean sheet definitely gave us an injection of belief.

“It was pleasing for the defence to get that clean sheet but also for Mika to get the winning goal.

“As a striker he’s taken a bit of a stick of late and he’s got the winning goal.

“It was a great cross by Kane Vincent-Young for the goal, to pick Mika out from that area and it was a good finish.

“From minute one, especially in the first 45 minutes, some of the football we played was out of this world.

“It was terrific and we keep saying to the boys to keep the ball under pressure and some of the play through the lines was excellent.”
