Way’s praise for keeper Nelson after Yeovil win at Colchester

Yeovil Town boss Darren Way was full of praise for his goalkeeper Stuart Nelson after he helped them claim a 1-0 win at Colchester United.

Nelson, who joined the Glovers from Gillingham last month, saved Sammie Szmodics’ early penalty and made a series of fine saves after that, to help his side claim victory.

Alex Fisher bagged Yeovil’s 21st-minute winner, slotting in from close range from Francois Zoko’s assist after Omar Sowunmi had flicked on Ryan Dickson’s long throw.

Way said: “(Stuart) Nelson is a very good signing and I feel very fortunate to have a player of 37 years of age with all of his experience to finish the season strongly.

“From what he’s just shown in a short space of time, he’s what we’ve needed.

“He’s a goalkeeper who’s pulled off match-winning saves and a penalty.

“He’s very vocal in the dressing room and he helped my team win a football match.

“Conditions weren’t great but I have to say from the team and the shape that we played we were very, very disciplined and well organised.

“You have to win football matches and it doesn’t matter how you do it – the players from start to finish gave maximum effort.

“We talked about a new factor from the Exeter game and the players have given a magnificent performance.

“Alex (Fisher) was very clinical with his goal and I thought he finished it very well.”

Colchester head coach John McGreal was left to rue Szmodics’ missed eight-minute penalty, awarded after Dickson had fouled Kane Vincent-Young in the area.

Frankie Kent, Olamide Shodipo and Liam Mandeville were denied by Nelson as Colchester fell to a third defeat in four matches, leaving them nine points adrift of the play-off places with nine games to go.

McGreal said: “Had we got an early goal, I think it was a very different game.

“I thought we dominated the game in the first half and we had chances that we didn’t score and that’s been the crux of what’s happened this season really.

“We’ve got into the attacking third but we’ve just been wasteful and it’s about key moments in games.

“I’ve said that from day one and it’s still here with us today.
“We missed a penalty and that’s where we’re at.

“We’ve been beaten but I thought the lads put in a great shift and the numbers will back that up that and it’s not for the want of trying.

“It was definitely about our decision-making and quality – that’s where you can ask but the boys have put in a shift to try to get a win against a team we should be beating, looking at how we performed in the first half.”
