Newport should have beaten Luton, says County boss Flynn

Newport County manager Michael Flynn praised his side’s performance after they held promotion-chasing Luton Town to a 1-1 draw at Rodney Parade.

Josh Sheehan put the Exiles ahead after a mere three minutes before Dan Potts levelled for the Potters.

The draw sees Luton remain in second place while Newport County are in 11th place, seven points behind the play-off places.

“I thought we were the better team, especially in the second half,” said Flynn.

“We were by far the better team and we should have won the football match. It was a very lively start.

“I’m disappointed with the goal we conceded because the boy had a free header but apart from Collins hitting the bar there wasn’t much more that they created.

“They’re the top boys in the league, they’ve got the biggest budget in the league and my boys have just been outstanding.

“I can’t fault the players. They’re a great group and they give they’re all for this football club.

“We’ve got another two home games in a row and we’ve got to start winning some games and picking up some points but today was a fantastic performance from the players.”

Aaron Collins beat three defenders with a weaving run into the penalty box. His shot was deflected before Sheehan tucked away the rebound for his second goal in as many games.

Newport nearly doubled their lead when Robbie Willmott’s header was cleared off the line by Marek Stech.

Potts equalised for the visitors with his header beating Newport keeper Joe Day from a corner.

Luton began to dominate possession and hit the bar from James Collins’ shot after a quick break but the score remained 1-1 at the interval.

The home side began the second half brightly with Collins coming close when his header was deflected over the post by Scott Cuthbert.

With Newport applying all the pressure Frank Nouble forced Stech into a fine save. But Michael Flynn’s side could not make their pressure tell and the visitors held on for a draw.

Luton manager Nathan Jones was annoyed with his sides defending as they gifted the hosts an early goal.

“We showed a lot of character and we are making a habit of coming from behind,” said Jones.

“During the last two away games we’ve given ourselves a mountain to climb by conceding first. Teams are not having to earn that. We’ve given it to them through bad defending and that’s the thing I’m disappointed with.

“Apart from the goal it was a good performance. We grafted and worked hard but it’s just the fact we have to chase the game.

“We have to start picking up three points because we don’t want to fall behind and we don’t want anyone catching us.”
