Neil Harris hails Ben Marshall wonder-goal as Millwall step up play-off push

Millwall manager Neil Harris was delighted with his side as they comfortably won 2-0 at Barnsley.

The victory ensured the Lions’ impressive unbeaten run continued in the Sky Bet Championship as goals from Lee Gregory and Ben Marshall kept them in the hunt for a play-off place.

Gregory opened the scoring with a cool finish in the 24th minute, before Marshall’s curling effort from long range in the 63rd minute sealed the win.

For Barnsley their struggles continued and they never looked like taking points from the game. Kieffer Moore went close on a couple of occasions but was met by an in-form Jordan Archer in the visitors’ goal.

The Reds’ best effort came from Oli McBurnie with around 15 minutes left but his effort was hooked off the line by Jake Cooper to prevent the hosts from getting back into the match.

Harris said: “Any three points at this level is a good achievement.

“If you look at Barnsley, they have a distinct style of play – they’ve definitely improved. I thought we found another way to win the game, we dominated early on and then capitalised on a mistake.

“It was good composure from us to get the goal. I never felt in danger in the first half. We scored at a key time, Ben Marshall’s goal was outstanding.

“I thought Barnsley threw caution to the wind in the last half an hour and were unlucky not to score.

“We’re going like a steam train. We’ve got a massive Easter period – we’ll be chasing the points over that period. The importance of having strength in depth has been key. The desire to play is great.”

Barnsley boss Jose Morais, whose side are fighting a battle to beat the drop, said: “I believe it is disappointing. Not only for me, but for the players.

“The reason why is that you prepare a game in a stable way, you come into the game in a strong way, and then in a situation you give the ball away and give away a chance.

“I also believe that when you make a mistake like this you need to recover and react. We took some time to react.

“We pushed the opponents. We tried and we created. We had chances to do it but we didn’t score. In front of goal we weren’t effective.

“We believed that we could score. We couldn’t do it and they had a good strike, it was a fantastic strike.

“I just felt disappointed. The game started to become more difficult because they are a good side. We are not getting the results we need to have.”
