Mesut Ozil: It was easy to say yes to new Arsenal deal

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil claims it was an easy decision to sign a contract extension at the club.

The German international entered the current season with just a year left on his contract and there were fears Ozil would leave on a free transfer this summer.

Arsenal had to let Alexis Sanchez go during the January transfer window in a swap deal with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitarian, with the Chilean's contract up in the summer.

But shortly after Ozil's new contract was announced, and the German insists he has his sights set on winning "some titles with the team".

"It feels really good," Ozil told Arsenal Player on his new deal.

"I'm really happy to sign here for such a big club like Arsenal. I've always said to the club that I'm happy here and now I've signed, I'm really happy.

"My team-mates and family have always supported me. I have a lot of goals here with the team, I want to reach those and I'm really happy. I love the city," added the German.

"Before I signed the contract, I spoke with my family about what the best decision was for me. At the end of the day, it was really easy for me to say 'yes' to the club.

"I'm here for more years and I hope we will win some titles with the team. I believe in that."

Ozil originally signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 for £42.5million and has made 189 appearances for the club being directly involved in 102 goals (37 goals, 65 assists).

The assist king

In setting up Shkodran Mustafi's opener against Watford on Sunday, Ozil recorded his 50th assist in the Premier League after 141 games – becoming the fastest player to reach the milestone.

Despite playing with doubts over his future in the first half of the season, the German has been a key creator for Arsenal, creating 78 chances and recording eight assists.

In the Premier league this season, only Kevin De Bruyne has created more chances (89) while also making 14 assists thanks, in part, to the prowess of his strike force and midfield at Manchester City.

Ozil is sure to start for the Gunners in their next game, where they take on AC Milan at the Emirates in their Round of 16 second leg tie in the Europa League.
