Steve Evans will keep his feet on the ground

Peterborough manager Steve Evans is trying not to get carried away after seeing his side claim a last-gasp 1-0 victory at Bury.

The struggling Shakers were pushing for a much-needed winner but Jack Marriott stunned the hosts with a stoppage-time winner.

That gave Evans his second win in two games as Posh boss and edged the team back into the League One play-off places.

Evans said: “I think we deserved to get the three points. For 15 minutes in the first half it was waves of attack and their keeper made two great saves.

“Ryan Lowe got a great shift from his players, there were blocks all over the place, and the second half became much of a stalemate.

“We didn’t have the dominance we had in the first half but we’ve got that quality if an opportunity comes.

“It was an outrageous pass by Marcus Maddison, he’s got that magic, and it was the most accomplished finish you’ll see. I just expected Jack to score and he did what he does.

“The supporters can dream, the chairman will no doubt be dreaming on
‘tweety pie’ (Twitter) but it doesn’t matter to me where we are in the table.

“We’re fighting to be in the play-offs, we’ve got 10 games to go, and we’ll try to keep our fight on the ground.”

Connor Ripley denied Marriott and Danny Lloyd in the first half while George Miller went closest for Bury.

After the break, Neil Danns’ close-range header was saved by Posh keeper Jonathan Bond while Danny Mayor and Rohan Ince fired wide for Bury.

Bond then denied Jay O’Shea and Peter Clarke but Phil Edwards was caught in possession and Maddison’s through-ball allowed Marriott to chip Ripley and keep Bury nine points from safety at the bottom.

Manager Ryan Lowe said: “I thought it was a smash and grab. We were trying to go for it because we needed a win. Maybe we should have taken a point but we gambled for three.

“Maybe we should have just seen it out. I do like us to try and play football. But Peterborough went from back to front early and maybe that’s what we might have to look at.

“First half we were way off and I gave them a bit of a rollicking at half-time. You could see it was better and we should have scored.

“Then a chance falls to Marriott and he’s a top finisher. We could do with someone like him in our team, but there’s still positive vibes.

“People have written us off before but we’ve come back and got a bit of life in us. There’s 10 games left so anything can happen. It’s about how we react now.”
