John Coleman delighted as late win moves Accrington top

Accrington boss John Coleman was thrilled to see his side leapfrog Luton and reach the League Two summit with a dramatic 2-1 victory at Kenilworth Road.

Billy Kee’s last-gasp winner coupled with Sean McConville’s fantastic strike in the first half was enough to knock the Hatters off top spot for the first time since late November.

Coleman said: “Sean’s one is probably one of the best goals I’ve seen in a long while.

“He’s got that in his locker. Billy has got it more in his locker but Sean’s got it. It’s always nice when you’re forward players score.

“In the last minute we got the ball down and passed it. Where anybody else might have smashed the ball into the box or took a chance, we were clever enough to pass it to Billy.

“If you back off the league’s leading goal-scorer you’re inviting trouble.

“They did and we wouldn’t want anybody else in that position. Billy has got an unbelievable shot from very little backlift and as soon as it left his foot it was in and I knew it was in.

“Psychologically, we are now the team to be shot. We’ve got to take that mantle and embrace it like Luton have done all season. I love it.

“We’ve won nothing yet. This is a big step in the right direction but there is a long, long way to go.”

Elliot Lee had levelled for Luton in the 61st minute but Kee’s strike at the death left second-placed Town with just one win from their last five games.

Boss Nathan Jones said: “It’s disappointing in the context of everything. We couldn’t do much about the first goal, it was a wonderful strike, but I thought we dominated for 80, 90 per cent of the game.

“We had enough chances to have put the game to bed, but when it wasn’t and when you don’t defend properly late on, it’s cost us.

“We had a few cleared off the line, a penalty shout, the keeper has made an unbelievable save from Jack Stacey and I felt we were the better side, but they scored two, we scored one, that’s the facts.

“In terms of an overall performance, I thought we were better, it was a good performance, but we’ve got to score.

“In recent games here we’ve been clinical where we’ve had sevens and eights and we weren’t clinical today in terms of that level.

“But it’s football and we’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again.”
