Bury boss Ryan Lowe vows to keep fighting

Manager Ryan Lowe has vowed to continue taking the game to the opposition after his Bury side won 2-1 at home to Gillingham.

The Shakers threatened to run riot early on as Neil Danns scored a 12th-minute opener before Harry Bunn doubled their lead after 25 minutes.

Connor Ogilvie pulled one back in the 69th minute but Bury hung on to climb back off the bottom of League One and move within eight points of safety.

Lowe said: “My heart was in my mouth the last five minutes but I thought the boys were magnificent.

“We created chances, had plenty of shots and there was a goal-line clearance. To a man, the lads were top drawer today.

“We have a game-plan – we want to attack and score goals because ultimately that’s what’s going to get us out of this mess.

“I was actually disappointed it was only 2-0 at half-time. Sometimes you can score too early and you ease off, so I told the boys I wanted more.

“They did try, and we hung on at the end, but you’re going to have to do that against a decent Gillingham team that’s been on fire.

“Connor Ripley should have saved the header for their goal and their manager’s been complimentary. He said that sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say the better team won, and it did today.”

After Danns and Bunn scored, mid-table Gillingham replied with substitute Scott Wagstaff blazing over before crossing for left-back Ogilvie to head home.

Wagstaff curled wide in stoppage time and goalkeeper Tomas Holy had a shot saved after going up for a corner, but the Gills suffered just their second defeat in 14 league games.

Manager Steve Lovell said: “The first half was the worst 45 minutes since I took over (October 12) but you have to give credit to Bury. They gave it a really good go, they caused us problems and thoroughly deserved to go in 2-0 up.

“It was disappointing after the good run we’ve been on but all good runs come to an end and now we have to dust ourselves down.

“I think in the last 30 minutes we put pressure on them and had a number of opportunities to get something out of the game, but we’re not going to perform miracles every weekend.

“Bury are fighting for their lives and over the 90 minutes they thoroughly deserved the three points.

“The damage was done in the first half by conceding the two goals but we’re not too disappointed because we’ll go away and work hard for next week.”
