Paul Hurst delighted with Shrewsbury’s win at Charlton

Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst could not hide his delight after his side enjoyed an impressive 2-0 win at Charlton.

Jon Nolan missed a first-half penalty but their overall dominance was rewarded thanks to goals after the break from Alex Rodman and Omar Beckles.

The result kept the Shrews second in the League One table, one point behind leaders Blackburn, with Hurst suitably impressed afterwards.

He said: “I am delighted in all honesty. I thought we looked a good team again today. It is the best we’ve played for a little while.

“We were probably going into the game, in my opinion at least, as underdogs in front of a big crowd.

“Karl Robinson has mentioned recently he has been really happy with his team’s performances and were starting to look like a good side.

“So to come here and win without too many arguments, and missing a penalty as well, was very, very pleasing.

“Without the ball we did make it really difficult for Charlton.

“After starting well for the first few minutes when they had three attempts in the space of a minute or so, which was big for us not to concede when we were reliant on a couple of really big saves.

“After that I thought we got on top of the game and for me looked the better team.”

Charlton boss Karl Robinson acknowledged his side were second best on the day.

He said: “I am sitting here today holding my hands up – we were nowhere near good enough. But I know exactly the reasons why.

“We didn’t do what we asked them to do. I wouldn’t say we were over confident.

“Because the players are talented, I think they thought their talent would override their energy levels today and their honesty, but it doesn’t.

“You have to match that to win any game.”

Shrewsbury goalkeeper Dean Henderson had made an excellent double save to thwart Josh Magennis and Joe Aribo, although Robinson accepted it made little difference to the final outcome.

He added: “If we scored early on maybe it is a different type of game but we’ve missed too many chances.

“But I can’t sit in front of you and say if we scored then we would definitely go on to win the game.

“If you look at 80 per cent of the football today I think we were second best.”
