Rooney’s late strike sees Guiseley shock AFC Fylde

Guiseley stunned AFC Fylde with a 1-0 victory to earn their first win in 10 Vanarama National League matches and their maiden triumph under caretaker boss Sean St Ledger.
The league’s top goalscorer Danny Rowe was through on goal after latching onto Jonathan Smith’s long ball but the striker was denied by a great save by Luke Coddington before James Hardy spurned two half-chances as the the visitors searched for an opener.
Former Republic of Ireland international St Ledger was thwarted by Jordan Tunnicliffe with a shot-cross from the right wing but the defender did just enough to deflect the ball wide as both teams went in 0-0 at the break.
Smith went close on two occasions and Tunnicliffe headed wide as AFC Fylde ramped up the pressure but the Coasters could not convert, while at the other end, Dayle Southwell could only shoot at visiting goalkeeper Jay Lynch before John Rooney coolly slotted home with four minutes remaining to earn a surprise three points.
