Lincoln boss Danny Cowley to fight his corner

Lincoln manager Danny Cowley said he would appeal any ban he receives after being sent to the stands during his side’s 3-1 defeat at Crawley.

Cowley was dismissed by referee Trevor Kettle as the players came in at half-time after appearing to have an altercation with Crawley captain Jimmy Smith.

But after the match Cowley insisted he was merely trying to calm down central defender Luke Waterfall who had just been booked.

Cowley said: “I came onto the pitch to try and usher away Luke Waterfall from the referee as he had just been booked.

“If I get a ban as a result of this, I will definitively appeal.

“It was very dramatic how the referee did it. Their assistant put his face in the face of our assistant at the same time.”

Cowley, who has already had a one-game touchline ban this season, admitted his team were well below their best as they went down to their first defeat since New Year’s Day.

Top-scorer Matt Green cancelled out Smith’s early opener shortly after the break, but a Josh Payne penalty and Paul Connolly’s close-range finish gave Crawley maximum points.

Cowley added: “The process was not right, but we have only lost two of our last 18 games and have to go again.

“In the first half we didn’t pass the ball well enough, Crawley kept the ball and we looked tired.

“Second half we found the level and came more into it, but football can be harsh and we have to shoulder responsibility and get on with it.”

Crawley head coach Harry Kewell is refusing to reveal what his end of season goal is after the Reds made it five successive home victories for the first time in the English Football League.

Town are now only two points off a play-off place and Kewell said: “At the start of the season we were second favourites for relegation.

“I had my own goals but I like secrets. We are in a comfortable position at the moment.

“This was a game we deserved to win – 1,000 per cent. It’s great to be breaking records.”

Crawley have won eight of their last 10 games and the former Liverpool and Leeds forward says his men are revelling in their improved form.

Kewell added: “This is a great league to be part of. It gives the players a chance to go up to the next level.

“We have become hard to beat at home recently and you have to give credit to the players.

“I continue to be delighted by players’ attitude and the way they have adapted to games.”
