Valverde: Messi wants to win everything with Barcelona and Argentina

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said that Lionel Messi wants to win everything with the Catalan club and his country following controversial comments by the Argentine federation chief that he should play less for his club side.

Claudio Tapia claimed that he had spoken with Messi over not playing as much for Barcelona so as to be fresher for the World Cup and they were comments that did not go down well in Catalonia.

Valverde, though, looked to difuse the situation.

"I have full confidence in all my players and especially Messi," the Basque told a press conference.

"His aim is to win everything with Barcelona and his national team."

They have had no mid-week fixture this week, with tiredness having been put forward as a reason for them drawing their last two LaLiga games.

"It is more mental than physical, the weeks when you have four days rest you can manage better than three," explained Valverde.

"We will have three before we take on Chelsea and Chelsea will have four. That day extra, to have a break from the pressure of staying in the cup is good to have."

Valverde is putting the Champions League clash with Chelsea to one side with his priority the LaLiga clash with Eibar this weekend.

"In terms of important games, the one tomorrow is also and we are not thinking about Chelsea," he went on.

"The week was free and now we have games again after each other. We need to get going again and after the Getafe game this is now even more important.

"The season is going well but runs are also important. What we have said from the start of the season is that there is a long way to go and it is never easy to pick up three points, more so than people think.

The recent draws have seen Barcelona's lead at the top of the table reduced.

"When you start thinking about margins for error then it is the first step towards losing it," stated Valverde.

"If you look at the table and see the points then it is clear that we can afford to lose but that is a mistake to look at it that way, we need to always go into the next game trying to be strong.

"I like the spirit in this team, how they overcome problems and the way they don't look too far ahead."
