Sunderland vs Brentford - Midfielder Callum McManaman could return for Sunderland

Callum McManaman could return to the Sunderland squad for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Brentford.

McManaman has missed the last month with a shin problem, but has trained all week and may force his way into manager Chris Coleman’s plans once again.

Midfielders Jonny Williams and Paddy McNair played for the club’s Under-23s last Sunday as they stepped up their respective comebacks, while Adam Matthews is confident of shaking off the calf problem which sidelined him at Bristol City.

However, defender Lamine Kone, who also played for the Under-23s, is still short of match fitness while Robbin Ruiter, Marc Wilson, Darron Gibson and Duncan Watmore are still out.

Brentford boss Dean Smith will again be without winger Sergi Canos as he continues is suspension.

The Spaniard was sent off during the 3-0 league defeat at Derby on February 3 and serves the second instalment of his three-match ban.

Smith has only defender Rico Henry on the long-term casualty list as he works his way back from a knee injury.

However, he made five changes to include John Egan, Josh Clarke, Nico Yennaris, Josh McEachran and Neal Maupay for last weekend’s 1-1 draw with 10-man Preston and could be tempted to shuffle his pack once again.
