Paul Warne wants Rotherham’s feel good factor to last all season

Jubilant Rotherham boss Paul Warne is refusing to put a lid on what his side can achieve this season on the back of their well-earned 2-1 success at Scunthorpe.

Goals from Joe Newell and Semi Ajayi earned the Millers a fourth straight win – extending their unbeaten run to 11 games in the process – and League One’s form team look well-positioned to mount a serious promotion push.

Warne said: “We just set up to try to win every game.

“Obviously this run is going to end sooner rather than later, so we’ve got to enjoy it while we can.

“It’s a lovely feeling as a professional footballer when you walk on the pitch and think you’ve won before you even kick a ball.

“The believe in that dressing room. It’s a real good group and the staff work harder than the average bear.

“I thought it was a really good game between two in-form teams. I knew if we could get up and compete around Scunthorpe, we’re taking good strides.

“I was really pleased with how we played. It was a game of few chances in the first half, which wasn’t through a lack of effort, but we took ours well.

“In the second half I thought we more than matched them and were the stronger team. I was disappointed with the goal we gave away, but apart from that I didn’t really think our keeper had much to do.”

Newell hooked Rotherham ahead in the 31st minute, after the home side had failed to deal with a long throw, and although substitute Lee Novak netted minutes after Ajayi’s looping header had doubled the Millers’ lead, rarely did they look like squandering all three points.

The turning point, though, for the home side came shortly before the break, when Scunthorpe’s appeals for a penalty – after Ivan Toney appeared to be bundled over by keeper Marek Rodak, were waved away by referee Graham Salisbury.

It prompted strong opinion from Scunthorpe boss Graham Alexander, who described it as “stonewall”.

He said: “I heard two different explanations in 10 seconds when speaking to the officials at half-time. They were making it up and that’s the second time we’ve had that with this referee in the space of five or six weeks. It’s not right.

“I know they have a difficult job, which is why I didn’t go see him the last time he gave a similar decision here. I gave him the benefit of the doubt then but twice in two games, in quick succession? Something’s not right.

“If we get it, hopefully we score it and it’s 1-1 at half-time which settles us down and allows us to play with more composure in the second half, rather than having to chase it.

“Games between very good teams are decided by fine lines, which is why you need people who make the right decisions.”
