Max Ehmer has always fancied himself as a goalscorer – Steve Lovell

Unlikely Max Ehmer goalscorer has always fancied himself in front of goal, according to Gillingham boss Steve Lovell.

The German defender took a bouncing ball on his chest before finishing well from the edge of the area in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw against Peterborough.

Danny Lloyd looked to have given Posh a first away league win since Boxing Day when he netted after 67 minutes but Ehmer responded in the third minute of added time with his second league goal of the season.

Lovell said: “I’d like to take the credit for chucking him up front but I think he took himself up there!

“Max took his goal well. He fancies himself as a goalscorer in training.

“When we went behind, we decided to go three at the back and have a go. Why not when you’re losing 1-0?

“We got a result but I won’t say it was because of the formation. We got the ball down and started to play.

“Before that we huffed and puffed but gave the ball away too often. Credit to the opposition, they sat deep, closed us down and stopped us playing.

“In the first half, it was a lacklustre performance by both sides. The second half opened up a bit and we rolled our sleeves up, went right to the end and got our equaliser.

“Based on our second-half performance, we deserved that. We’ve gained a point here, not lost two.”

Peterborough boss Grant McCann felt his goalkeeper Jonathan Bond should have prevented Ehmer’s leveller.

“Their equaliser was a straight shot and I think Bondy could have done better with it. It was straight at him,” said McCann.

The Posh boss had plenty of positives to take from the contest, though.

“I’m really pleased with the response from last week (a 1-0 home loss to Southend),” said McCann. “We were outstanding from start to nearly the finish.

“We did everything right, we passed the ball well, we created opportunities in difficult conditions.

“I’m disappointed for boys. I’m really, really disappointed to concede so late – it was a sucker punch.

“I told the boys that I didn’t want to see any heads down. We’ve come away to one of the form teams in the league and nearly won the game. The players deserve enormous credit for their attitude and performance.

“We had enough chances to win the game, we just didn’t take them. We have to go and beat Scunthorpe on Tuesday now. We need six points this week to keep us up there.”
