Darren Ferguson hails Doncaster spirit after denying Charlton late on

Doncaster boss Darren Ferguson hailed his side for never giving up as they earned a late point despite a poor performance against Charlton.

Patrick Bauer put Charlton in front on 18 minutes with a back-post header and the play-off chasing visitors always looked the stronger.

But Matty Blair headed in a stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a scantly-deserved point for off-colour Doncaster.

While admitting his side were far from their best, Ferguson was full of praise for their character.

“Credit to the players – they kept going and it’s a good habit to have that we find a way of getting something out of a game, even if it’s only a draw,” he said.

“Blair has popped up in injury time and we’ve done that a few times lately.

“It’s not a coincidence, it shows a good character within the team to not know when they’re beat.

“That was pleasing that they kept going until the end.

“I thought we were poor today, we didn’t have any fluency to what we wanted to do.

“We’ve gone behind to another set-piece, we never got our passing game going.

“There were too many wrong decisions made at the wrong times.

“But I just felt there was too many misplaced passes and not enough rhythm to what we were trying to do. It was a bit huff and puff.

“But when you get games like that where it’s clearly not one of our better performances, you have to be happy with the result.”

Charlton boss Karl Robinson has urged his side to find a touch of ruthlessness in front of goal after squandering the lead.

The Addicks were comfortable throughout and missed several chances before being hit with a hammer blow in injury time.

While pleased with the overall performance, Robinson was frustrated Charlton did not put the game to bed.

“Doncaster did not create a chance so we’ve done our job,” he said.

“The thing is, you have an unlucky deflection and it drops to somebody who scores that’s not anything you can do anything about.

“I don’t think the players have done anything wrong.

“It took two deflections and their man has thrown himself at the ball on the line.

“The important thing is, you don’t take your chances at 1-0. We need to be more ruthless when we go 1-0 up.

“We were excellent and I don’t think anyone could say anything negative about our performance.

“The big thing is that we’ve not turned a very comfortable position into three points.

“We have to be more ruthless and have more of an edge.

“I think people go into these situations thinking we’ll get another one but we need to find that edge to make sure we do.”
